Next Fest NW 2023: RUPTURE/REVERENCE
December 7, 2023 - December 9, 2023
Next Fest NW is Velocity’s experimental new works festival, celebrating contemporary dance and movement-based artists innovating in our region. This year’s festival features four pieces by regional artists maximiliano (PDX), Kara Beadle (SEA), Danielle Ross, and Sophie Marie Schatz (TAC). This year, the cohort of artists chose the theme RUPTURE/REVERENCE to act as the framework for their show. This theme represents a common thread in the artists’ research – art as societal disruption while maintaining an honoring of where the form has been and where it is going.

EL SUEÑO: MESTIZO/Breaking the Caste

MESTIZO will include visual arts, film, music, dance, and ceremony that powerfully weave together our collective experiences. Audiences will be guided through the various spaces throughout the gallery to explore the collected stories of the Mexican experience. The gallery contains an altar created in collaboration between all participating artists. It features a huge braid climbing up a wall– a symbol of American Indian pride.

The Steadfast Tin Soldier: A Story Ballet is a family-friendly show that delights everyone with an engaging and tender retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen tale. Enjoyable for all ages, its length of 1 hour and 15 minutes makes it a perfect introduction to the theater for young audience members!
Colorful hand-tailored costumes, locally designed and hand-painted scenery, a cast of fifty young dancers and an ensemble of musicians come together to present this charming and heartwarming holiday dance event. Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) has been incorporated into the choreography to make this performance accessible for the hearing impaired.
