OUR TENTH ANNIVESARY!
We come to the close of a ten year existence and feel proud of our legacy and excited about the future. Over the ten years, we have been able to participate in an incredible process of training and encouraging sweet, wide-eyed elementary aged, “eager to please” dance students to respectful, mature, worldly and highly skilled dance students. It has been an amazing journey that we celebrate tonight at this tenth Rite of Spring performance and tomorrow at our Tenth Anniversary Open House at Dance Fremont! Why does one invest time and money to the study of dance? If one does not excel or have the guarantee of a professional job in dance, should one stop studying dance? How does one measure success in dance?
These are questions we have pondered this year and would like to share with you our feelings about the numerous benefits for studying dance, regardless of a finite outcome. The benefits of learning to dance are much more than acquiring the skill to plié or tendù and moving through space with grace, strength and flexibility. Aside from learning a non-verbal way of communicating, the dance student learns life lessons to accept critique, to quickly assess a situation and stay on course and/or creatively make adjustments, to respect challenging work and strive to improve in those challenging areas, to persevere, knowing that progress may be slow and there will always be room for more improvement and to cooperatively work together with peers. It is also our hope that you will see the greatest benefit; the joy in your child’s dancing during one of the numerous performance opportunities that we provide for our students..
Measuring success in dance is difficult and only the student can answer this question from their own heart. There are no times to beat, points to be made or trophies on the shelf. The joy and sense of accomplishment one experiences during and after a performance is fleeting. These dancers are unique individuals; they work for months to perfect dance works that may last for only a few moments on stage over a period of a weekend. Then, after a brief period of rest for the body, they begin again. What better work ethic could any employer or university admittance committee ask of from a perspective employee or college bound applicant?...
